While that design achieved many of its original aims, it has not met the needs of all learners, and it no longer prepares young people for a rapidly changing world. In addition to content knowledge, learners need strong relationships, adaptability, social-emotional awareness, and the ability to think critically and solve complex problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the country, educators are already creating these kinds of learning experiences. Yet, the structures that shape daily school life often make this work difficult to sustain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>School redesign<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is therefore not about surface-level innovation. It\u2019s about reimagining the purpose and design of school to align with the science of learning, human development, and the realities of today\u2019s world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Playbook draws on <\/span><b>Learner-Centered Collaborative\u2019s work with schools and districts nationwide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighting communities that have redesigned school and learning in ways that reflect their unique contexts and aspirations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Conway Academy, in Escondido, CA:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prioritizing whole-learner development through mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>H\u0101lau K\u016b M\u0101na Public Charter School, in Honolulu, HI:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grounding learning in culture, community, and place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Alexandria City High School, in Alexandria, VA:<\/b> providing student choice and connections between what students are learning and their futures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through these examples, the Playbook explores <\/span><b>five Learner-Centered School Design Structures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that enable sustainable, learner-centered education:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small Learning Communities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance Assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real-World Learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distributed Leadership<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teacher Collaboration<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, school redesign is about evolving toward what learners need now and in the future.
