In short, it\u2019s having confidence that you have the people, the grit, and the resilience to bring your organizational vision to fruition. Without collective efficacy driving decision-making and implementation efforts, even the most well-designed plans for change are likely to stall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John Hattie\u2019s research highlights the profound impact of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visiblelearningmetax.com\/Influences\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Collective Teacher Efficacy (CTE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in schools. Hattie defines CTE\u00a0 as, \u201cthe shared belief by a group of teachers in a particular educational environment that they have the skills to positively impact student outcomes\u201d (Corwin Visible Learning, 2023). Each element plays an instrumental role when redesigning school structures and the learning experiences offered in an education ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Drivers to Positively Influence Levels of Collective Efficacy\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">District and school leaders can focus their energy on the following four drivers to positively influence levels of collective efficacy across their organization: Vicarious Learning, Verbal Persuasion, Emotional Arousal, and Mastery Learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Vicarious Learning\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><b>Vicarious learning <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">occurs when team members have the opportunity to observe each other completing tasks or achieving desired outcomes. This can be achieved through various means, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creating intentional mentorship networks linking new leaders with more experienced ones and facilitating shadowing experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leveraging platforms for sharing success stories, such as newsletters or social media channels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facilitating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learnercentered.org\/blog\/learning-walks-what-why-how\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learning Walks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to showcase strategies that have been successfully implemented<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creating time and space for learning through observing others is a powerful tool for building a sense of collective efficacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Verbal Persuasion<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Verbal persuasion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the use of positive communication and encouragement to influence individuals\u2019 beliefs in the collective capabilities of a team. School and district leaders can also consistently communicate the organization\u2019s vision and mission and make explicit links to the collective goals, helping team members see the bigger picture and identify their role within it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Emotional Arousal\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Emotional arousal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can positively enhance a team\u2019s belief in their collective ability to achieve organizational goals by igniting feelings such as excitement, pride, and empathy. Strategies to evoke emotional arousal include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Celebrating successes focused on desired goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sharing inspiring stories that highlight innovation to both internal and external communities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modeling positive attitudes and behaviors that demonstrate optimism, resilience, and a strong belief in the team\u2019s capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, cultivating high levels of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learnercentered.org\/blog\/the-four-elements-of-trust\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> relational trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also enhances levels of collective efficacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><b>Mastery Learning<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Mastery learning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> occurs when teams experience success, accomplish a goal or outcome, and\/or profoundly impact an individual\u2019s or group\u2019s efficacy beliefs. District and school leaders can leverage a co-created <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learnercentered.org\/framework-for-the-future\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Framework for the Future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to explicitly define priority whole-learner outcomes, learning experiences, and enabling conditions it commits to education partners in their system. They can also leverage a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learnercentered.org\/blog\/scorecards-how-might-we-measure-what-matters-in-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">scorecard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to monitor progress toward the aspirations found in the framework.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A clear vision for where the organization is going and success metrics to measure progress is a great first step. However, timely celebrations of success must occur to positively influence levels of collective efficacy. This can be accomplished by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creating a culture of celebration that incorporates recognition events and communications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Providing opportunities that encourage community problem-solving and celebrate \u201cfailing-forward\u201d efforts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The Importance of Collective Efficacy in Transforming Education<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The evolution of how learners experience school requires high levels of collective efficacy. A team&#8217;s collective efficacy shapes their future aspirations, resource utilization, effort levels, and overall output. By engaging the four drivers, leaders can nurture team members&#8217; belief in one another to accomplish goals, clarity on the mission, and confidence to persist through challenges.
